Obituary of Lena Barone

 

Staten Island's oldest person, Lena Barone, passed away on May 28, 2024 at 109 years old.

 

Lena was born in Manhattan on January 24, 1915 to John and Rose Vallone. Lena's mom passed away when she was a young girl. She grew up in Brooklyn with her father and five brothers. On June 29, 1935, she married Angelo Barone and they settled in Dyker Heights, Brooklyn. They had two daughters Tina and Rose Mary were born. Lena was a mother and a homemaker. She was an excellent cook, known for her delicious meatballs and stuffed artichokes. Lena's many sister in laws lived nearby. They were her best friends, gathering often to shop, share meals and most importantly, playing cards. At Christmas time, Lena and her daughters would spend a whole weekend making struffoli be distributed to neighbors, family and friends.

 

Angelo passed away shortly after celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary in 1985. After that, Lena spent many years splitting her time between her home in Brooklyn and her daughters' home in Staten Island. In 2007, she made Staten Island her permanent home.

 

Besides playing cards with family members, her favorite thing to do was "play the slots" in Atlantic City. She continued to visit AC well into her nineties. Besides Angelo, Lena is pre-deceased by both daughters, Tina Barone and RoseMary Noll. She is survived by her three grandchildren, Christine Orlando (Nick), Richard Noll and Stephen Noll (Annette) and seven great grandchildren, Brittany Orlando, Nicholas Orlando, Matthew Noll, Joshua Noll, Brianna Noll, Zachary Noll and Sabrina Noll.

 

 The visitation will be at Matthew's Funeral Home on Sunday, June 2, 2024 from 2-4 pm and 6-8 pm. Funeral mass will be held at Holy Family Church, 10:30 a.m. on Monday, June 3, 2024 with interment to follow at Moravian Cemetery.
