Obituary of Timothy McGinley
Timothy Michael McGinley
Timmy "Slinky" McGinley, 70, of Westerleigh (but a proud New Brighton native), died on Monday, September 16, 2024, after a long, valiant battle with cancer.
Born to Jean and Jack McGinley on February 22, 1954, Timmy spent his formative years on Van Buren Street as the younger brother to three siblings, Jackie, Tommy & Susie and the older brother to his siblings, Jimmy & Peggy.
Timmy graduated St. Peter's Boys High School in 1971 where he played basketball for his father (Coach Jack McGinley) & later attended Farmingdale University.
For over 30 years, Timmy worked for AT&T & was a proud member of the Warren Jacques Committee.
Timmy was a dominant pitcher in the ASA (and several other Leagues) for many years with the Orchard Inn and The Bullpen Teams and in 1982, Tim was a member of Silvestri's as they proudly represented Staten Island and won their 2nd National Championship in Spokane, Washington.
Timmy was also a proud member of the Staten Island Sports Hall of Fame, being inducted with the Class of 2020 as a member of the Silvestri's ASA Softball Team. Being inducted into the Hall of Fame was very special to Timmy, as he joined his father, the legendary Coach Jack McGinley, as members of the Hall.
Besides a love for playing sports, Timmy was also an avid sports fan of the Mets, Jets & Islanders.
In 1986, his daughter Shannon was born, and he took on the most important role in his life…a loving Dad.
Timmy possessed a vast knowledge of history, sports (basketball, baseball, "the horses," Mickey Mantle & Joe Namath in particular), New and West Brighton matters, and current affairs - occasionally posting a political post or two on Facebook.
His mind was so sharp, he could tell you Who, What, When, Where and Why something happened on any given day of the year. He always had his finger on the pulse.
A self-proclaimed "Dead-Head," Timmy enjoyed his tunes, especially ones by Pink Floyd, The Grateful Dead, and anything Jimi Hendrix.
Timmy spent many years "behind the stick" at the historic Liedy's Shore Inn, a role he cherished for so many years, returning just a few short months ago for its final call.
Timmy had a sense of calmness to him, and a sense of humor that would reduce you to shreds.
Over the last couple of years, he shared lots of stories about growing up, how fast life moves, and how quickly it changes. He spoke fondly about family vacations to the Jersey shore, how much he loved his Mom, playing hooky to catch shows at Jones Beach, and many tales of staying "out" of trouble with his neighborhood friends. As he would say, "Enjoy it man, it goes too fast."
Timmy is survived by his daughter, Shannon, his sisters, Jeanne (Susie) McGinley, Margaret (Peggy) Reilly, brother Jim, sisters-in-law, Colleen & Ann Marie, many loving nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews & cousins.
He was predeceased by his parents, Jack & Jean McGinley and his brothers Jack and Tom McGinley.
