Obituary of George Stergio

George Stergio, a devoted family man, avid sports fan, and respected banker, passed away on November 28, 2024, at the age of 86.

Born on November 18, 1938, in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, George grew up to become a successful Vice President at Bank Leumi in New York City. However, his true passions lay in his family, sports, and the Staten Island community.

George is survived by his twin brother, William; his four children, George, Matthew, Andrew, and Jennifer; and his seven beloved grandchildren, Javier Jr., Jason, Riley, Alex, Mark, Mya, and Emma; father-in-law to Doryce, Michelle, Dararat, and Javier. He was predeceased by his loving wife, Frances.

A larger-than-life figure, George was renowned for his infectious enthusiasm, generous spirit, and unwavering support for his family and friends. He reveled in watching his grandchildren participate in various activities, including sports such as basketball, baseball, soccer, wrestling, and dance.

An avid sports fan, George was a die-hard supporter of the Pittsburgh Penguins, New York Mets, and the Duke Blue Devils. He also enjoyed golfing with friends, visiting casinos, traveling, and watching sports.

Family and friends are invited to a visitation at Matthew Funeral Home, 2508 Victory Boulevard, on Wednesday, December 4, from 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm. A prayer service will be held on Thursday at 10 am.
