Obituary of Emidio "Larry" Ponzi

Mr. Emidio "Larry" Ponzi, age 93, of New Springville, formerly of Park Slope, Brooklyn, passed away on November 10, 2018. He was the beloved husband of the late Edith (2015); loving father of Vincent "Jimmy" Ponzi (Carmel), Isabel Tanella (Philip), and Joseph Ponzi (Lisa); cherished grandfather of Janine Kovats (Steven), Christine Ponzi, Philip Tanella (Jennifer), Laura Gitter (Jason), Jennifer Caputo (Michael); devoted great-grandfather of Ava Lynn, Philip, Jason, Ryan, Joseph, Michael, Sienna, and Italia; dear brother of the late Helen Granice (late Frank); fond brother-in-law of Thomas DeRosa (late Jean), Rose Stasio (late John) and Lucille DeFelice (late Thomas). Also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Emidio was born in Brooklyn in 1925, and was raised in Park Slope. He graduated from the former Manual Training High School. After high school he enlisted in the U.S. Marines and served for three years and was a part of the Battle of Okinawa in the Pacific. Upon returning home he worked in various jobs, before joining the NYPD in 1951 and served there for 36 years. He retired in 1987 as a Detective Sergeant in the Brooklyn South Homicide Squad. Emidio was a fitness buff, being a member of the Prospect YMCA for over 50 years and enjoyed baseball, golf, paddleball, the racetrack. Upon his retirement from NYPD, he and his wife purchased a home in Palm Harbor, Florida, and spent many years together as snow birds, making a lot of friends along the way. In his later years he became a voracious reader.

In lieu of flowers, family would appreciate donations be made to the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

Funeral from the Matthew Funeral Home, Inc., 2508 Victory Boulevard, on Wednesday, departing at 9 am. Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at Our Lady of Pity R.C. Church at 9:30 am. Interment to follow in Greenwood Cemetery. Family and friends will be received on Monday from 7:00 to 9:00 pm and Tuesday from 2:00 to 5:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 pm.
