Obituary of Agnes M. Grecsek

Agnes M. Grecsek (nee Gleeson), age 88, passed away peacefully on January 29, 2019. She was the devoted daughter of the late Thomas and Florence Gleeson. She was the beloved wife of the late Gustave Grecsek Jr. for 55 years. She was the loving mother of John Grecsek, Anne Sweeney and Richard Grecsek. She was the dear Nana of Danielle and Sarah Sweeney. She was the fond sister of Johanna Cummings, Florence Gleeson, Thomas Gleeson, David Gleeson, Frances Chase, Margaret Gleeson and the late Catherine Donnelly, Mary Brech and Anne Johnson. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews. 

Agnes volunteered at the Foundling Hospital for Children and Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan. She was a graduate of St. Joseph Nursing School in Yonkers. Agnes worked at St. Vincent’s Hospital on Staten Island. She continued working and volunteering her time at Seaview Nursing Home also on Staten Island. 

Agnes married the love of her life, Gustave Grecsek Jr. in August, 1959. Both Agnes and Gustave were loved by their neighbors and community. Agnes and Gustave were very active in the VFW Post 7172 and made many wonderful friends. Agnes was a staple in Blessed Sacrament Church for 55 years. She will be remembered as a very spiritual person who put her God and Church first and instilled her strong faith in her children. Agnes was a wonderful, caring and loving person who will be dearly missed by all who knew her.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Cancer Society in Agnes’s memory.

Funeral departing from the Matthew Funeral Home, Inc., 2508 Victory Boulevard, on Saturday, 2/2/19, departing at 9:15 AM.  Funeral Mass will be celebrated in Blessed Sacrament R.C. Church at 10:00 AM. Interment will follow in Moravian Cemetery. Family and friends may visit on Thursday, 1/31/19, from 6:00 to 9:00 PM and Friday, 2/1/19 from 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 PM.
