Obituary of Mary S. Rogers

Mary S. Rogers (nee Speranza), 85, passed away peacefully on April 2, 2019, with her husband by her side. She was the beloved wife of John P. (Jack) Rogers, loving mother of Robert and John, loving mother-in-law of Mary Pat and Beth, cherished grandmother of Katie, Alana, Kevin, Emma, Kerry Anne and David. Mrs. Rogers was born and raised in Ridgewood, Queens. She graduated summa cum laude from St. John's University School of Commerce, having attended on a full academic scholarship. She worked during her later college years and after graduation for the International Operations area of General Motors. Mary and her husband started dating in the first semester of their freshmen year of college, 67-1/2 years ago. After marriage, they settled in Marine Park, Brooklyn. While raising a family, she started working as a first grade teacher for the New York City Board of Education and then attained a Master's Degree in Education from Brooklyn College before retiring to Highland Beach, Florida. They were snowbirds, spending the fall and winter in Florida and spending the summers, first in New Jersey, and the last couple of summers on Staten Island. Mary loved animals, often having animals in her classroom for the children, including incubating and hatching chickens. Her last pet was a cherished white tabby named Snowflake that loved to watch the birds in Florida and chase squirrels in New Jersey. She also loved PBS murder mysteries and reading.
