Obituary of John F. Turner

John F. Turner DOB: 8/24/1943 DOD: 5/27/2019 Mr. Turner was born in Bayonne,NJ, a former resident of Cranford,NJ, and moved to Staten lsland in the early 1990's. He received a BA degree in Elementary Education from the College of Santa Fe,N.M,.and was awarded a full fellowship to Fordham University, N.Y. John also obtained a M.S. degree in Special Education and Administration. John attended St. Patrick HS in Elizabeth,NJ, and was a player on the school's 1961 NJ State Championship basketball team and was inducted into the school's Hall of Fame. At the College of Santa Fe he was President of the Dorm Proctors,President of Los Compadres (Big Brothers,) and Treasurer of the Student Council ; additionally he was a religion teacher at the Santo Domingo lndian Reservation, N.M, Jack retired from the city's Department of Education in 2001 and had worked at the Hungerford School,in Stapleton for more that 30 years. He held the positions as Administrative Assistant, School Coordinator and lnclusion Supervisor for most of his career. Active with Staten lsland scouting he was Commissioner, Scouting for the Handicapped Nendawen District for 18 years and served as an Executive Board member for the S.l. Council,BSA. He was the boro's first recipient of the Greater N.Y. Council,BSA,"Educator of the Year Award" and received the Silver Beaver Award and was a member of the district's Order of the Arrow. Additionally he was an Executive Board Member of the S,l, Chapter of the American Red Cross and was further honored with the New York State Legislative Award for Service to the Staten lsland Community. He especially loved his 3 children,grandchildren,step grand children and enjoyed travel to ltaly and New Orleans, golfing, camping, Atlantic City and researching the U.S. Civil War. He is survived by his children: David (Missy) of Davenport, lowa, Kristine Fritz (Jonathan) of Sayreville,N.J. and Matthew (Kim) of Charlotte, N.C., and his Sister, Geraldine Buckley, of Timoniun, M.D. Also, he was survived by his devoted companion, Frances Danke, of Westerligh, and her sons Paul (Mary) and Peter.
