Obituary of Catherine M. Castell

Catherine Castell, 67 Lifelong Staten Island resident, Catherine Castell (born Fornal) passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 21st, in Staten Island Hospital North after a brief illness surrounded by her husband and dear friends. Catherine was born on August 30, 1951. She was the daughter of the late Catherine and Edward Fornal. Cathy is survived by her loving husband of 46 years, David Castell. Cathy and David were married on May 27, 1973 in St. Sylvester Church. She is also survived by her brother-in-law James Castellucci, sister-in-law Lois Futiu, nieces and close friends. Cathy graduated from St. Sylvester School, Countess Moore High School, and Wagner College. She received a Master's degree in elementary education and taught for 36 years at St. Sylvester School and four years at Our Lady Star of the Sea before her retirement in 2015. Cathy loved to sing and sang in the St. Sylvester Church choir for many years. She was happy teaching her second graders many hymns and songs. Cathy was an avid reader and enjoyed solving challenging jigsaw puzzles and Sudoku. She loved taking annual trips to Bar Harbor, Maine, and Cape May. She enjoyed antiquing and was collector of fine china dishes. Cathy loved American colonial history and was an active volunteer and member of the Conference House Board of Directors since 1998. She chaired many community events at the Conference House over the years. Funeral from the Matthew Funeral Home Inc., 2508 Victory Blvd. On Thursday, 7/25/19, departing at 9:15 AM. Funeral Mass will be celebrated in St. Sylvester's R.C. Church at 10:00 AM. Interment will follow in Moravian Cemetery. Family and friends may visit on Wednesday, 7/24/19, from 2:00 to 4:00 and 6:30 to 9:30 PM.
