Obituary of Mary Tsikteris

Loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and aunt Mary Tsikteris, 96, of Grasmere passed on Monday, August 26, 2019. Born and raised on Eldridge Street of Manhattan's Lower East Side, Mary attended the Institute of Fashion Design and worked as a seamstress. She married her one love (and prom date) James Tsikteris on June 30, 1939. Together, she and her husband moved to Staten Island in 1968, and Mary was instrumental in the design of their dream home that they had built in Grasmere. Mary was a devout Greek Orthodox and was a very active member of the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church. She was a proud member of the Daughters of Penelope for over 25 years, a past member and President of the Sons and Daughters of Lemnos for many years, and member of the Holy Trinity Golden Years Seniors group and its President for 12 years. Mary organized all the trips and banquets for the Senior club for years and was a permanent fixture as the 50/50 and mega raffle staff at the church's annual festival. Preceded in death by her parents Apostolo and Cleopatra Commonis, loving and devoted husband James Tsikteris, brothers Nicholas, Peter, and Edward Commonis, sister Helen. She is survived by her daughter Elaina Morakis, her son-in-law Anthony Morakis, her grandchildren Nicole and Frank Baldino, and James Morakis, and great-grandchildren Tyler, Finn, Ryan, Samantha, and Evan. Family, friends, and others whose lives were touched by Mary are invited to Matthew's Funeral Home at 2508 Victory Blvd, Staten Island, 10314 on Thursday, August 29, from 2-4pm and 6:30-8:30pm. The funeral service will be held at 10am on Friday, August 30 at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 1641 Richmond Ave, Staten Island. Entombment will follow the funeral at Moravian Cemetery.
