Nellie was born on July 29, 1924 in a tenement on Thompson Street, in NewYork City. At the age of 4, her parents, Rose and Frank Ferrara, settled in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, with the prospect of owning their own house in a neighborhood with better schools. After raising her 5 children she worked for the Department of Education as the Assistant Treasurer at Lafayette High School for over 10 years. Throughout her life, Nellie enjoyed hosting many holiday dinners. She and her husband Tony loved cooking and were known for their "Olympic" Lasagna, cheese casserole, sea food salad, among many other Sicilian dishes. They also were happiest when they were spending time with their family and grandchildren, sharing wonderful memories at the Jersey Shore, trips to California and traveling to upstate New York. Nellie will be remembered for her welcoming and warm nature. She was always considerate and thoughtful to others. She was adored and loved by all who were blessed to be in her presence. In addition to accepting flowers, the family would also appreciate donations be made to University Hospice in memory of Nellie.
