Oversized Caskets FAQ
Caskets are generally designed to fit a wide assortment of body types. However, some people may require an oversized casket. An oversized casket is used if an individual’s height, weight, or width is bigger than the standard casket size. In America, roughly 10% of the population would require an oversized casket. Below, we will discuss some important aspects of oversized caskets, and what you should know.
What is an Oversized Casket?
Simply put, an oversized casket is larger than the standard size of a casket. An American standard casket is about 84” long, 28” wide, and 23” high. Oversized models extend the width or length of the casket to provide more room for the deceased.
Who Needs an Oversized Casket?
Generally, if a person’s weight is above 350 lbs., they may need a larger casket model. If the deceased is taller than 7 feet, they will need a longer model. For width, the body is measured elbow to elbow. Your funeral home will let you know if your loved one requires an oversized casket.
Do Funeral Homes Regularly Carry Oversized Caskets?
Most funeral homes carry an assortment of larger casket models. Because roughly 1 out of 10 people require an oversized casket, most funeral homes will have multiple options.
Do Oversized Caskets Cost More?
While oversized caskets cost more than their standard counterparts, prices can be customizable. Caskets come in a wide variety of materials, with different interior treatments. Mahogany, walnut, steel, copper, and bronze caskets will generally cost more than oak, pine, or willow. If you are concerned about the price of your loved one’s casket, your funeral director can help you choose options that are more in line with your budget.
Does an Oversized Casket fit in a Mausoleum or Burial Plot?
Generally, a mausoleum space or grave plot will be able to accommodate an oversized casket. There is often leeway factored in if the interred needs a larger casket. However, even larger or custom-ordered caskets that go beyond the norm for a larger model may limit your options. Your funeral director can help you explore your options if needed.
