I first had the honor and privilege of getting to know John Bottone in 2013 when we spoke on the telephone about the Commissioning Bell of the U.S.S. Chilton. For the next two years, we talked frequently and became good friends even though we had never met in person. I’ll never forget the day in 2015 when John called me and said, “The U.S.S. Chilton Bell needs to go home to Chilton County.” Knowing how much the ship and its crew meant to John, I understood how important this decision was for him. I also knew how special this gift would be for the citizens of Chilton County, Alabama. Within days, a friend and I drove to Staten Island where I had the honor to meet John for the first time. The trip to meet John is, and will remain, one of the most special times of my life.
Each day, hundreds of people pass the U.S.S. Chilton Commissioning Bell display in the main foyer of the Chilton County Courthouse. Each day, people pause to look and remember the sacrifices made by people like John Bottone. John was a very special person who lived a full and rich life of service to his family, friends and to the citizens of the United States of America. John was truly one of our Greatest Generation and his memory will be preserved through his very special gift to the people of Chilton County, and in my heart, forever.
On behalf of the grateful citizens of Chilton County, Alabama I offer our heartfelt sympathy for the loss of a great patriot, a great man, and a dear friend.

Billy, I was privileged and fortunate to hear that story from Jack during one of my phone calls and to hear it again directly from you shows the man who Jack was. I was sad he was not able to travel to Chilton for the actual ceremony but he was very proud of his contribution to Chilton County.
Thanks for sharing the bell story. God Bless you!

To Jacks family and Blenda, my heart is heavy and I want you all to know how sorry I am of my good friend Jack’s passing..
Please accept my deepest and heartfelt condolences.
I have been a friend of Jack’s for over thirty years. I enjoyed visiting him at his home in Ft. Lauderdale when we talked of his ventures in the Navy and WW II. I last spoke to him a few weeks ago and would call him at least once a week. He was the kind of friend who comes around only once in life. I called him my “big brother and i loved him as such.
I will miss you more than anyone will ever realize. I always looked forward to our visits and phone calls and the calling each other on our birthdays. The picture below is the last of us together and i will cherish it all the days of my life.
RIP Jack, you fought a good fight and now its time for you to rest and enter into that special place called Paradise.
Your Loyal Friend,
Steven Vieira
