Andrew, my big brother by 18 months, lived large in the too-short time he had on earth. My parents adored him, the first boy in a second-generation Italian family. We grew up in Ozone Park (OZ) on a block where boys played stick ball in the street, stoop ball, and traded ball cards. The Yankees ruled. My dad was a Brooklyn boy from City Line. Every Sunday we'd walk to our grandparents apartment by the elevated subway. Andrew's love of card games started around grandma's table after pasta and meatballs with the sound of the train going by and the small of orange peels. Uncle Adolph became his mentor. Adolph would take Andrew fishing, taught him to swim like a champ, took us cousins to the beach and pool, and introduced him to betting and poker. Andrew always won, or so it seemed. We went to Catholic school and the few photos of us were either in angelic Holy Communion poses or with our million relatives in Minnesota. Ah, summers in Minnesota - by the lakes, on speed boats, where Andrew fished and learned to water ski. He was very popular and easily made friends wherever he went. During his teenage years he learned to surf and put together a band that practiced in our basement. He played base guitar. I don't believe they ever performed except to make my mother nuts with all that racket. He also was an altar boy. He even aspired to become a priest! Somehow I can't imagine how that would have turned out. I'm sure his girlfriends couldn't have imagined it either.
But the one girlfriend who first stole his heart was Melinda, his wife and the mother of his three kids. I'll let them continue the story from this point on. Andrew gambled on life and usually won big.
