Obituary of James Romano

Obituary of James Romano Retired New York City Firefighter Jimmy Romano, 90, passed away peacefully on March 24, 2018, surrounded by his family. He was the beloved husband of Genevieve Romano, loving father of Susan Santiago, Ellen D'Ambrosi, Paula McAvoy and Janet Romano; cherished grandfather of Kate McAvoy, Valerie Mulligan, Michael D'Ambrosi, Kevin McAvoy, Matthew D'Ambrosi, Alethea Jadick and James Jadick. He is also survived by his sister, Marcia Hughes, and his brother, John Romano. Jimmy was born in Manhattan and moved to Staten Island when he was three years old. He attended McKee High School. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Navyat the end of the Second World War and was honorably discharged in 1946. He and Genevieve were married in 1953, the same year he became a NYC police officer. Five years later he transferred to the NYC Fire Department. Several years after that he achieved the rank of Lieutenant and served in various houses throughout NYC. He retired from Engine 162 in Great Kills. Jimmy was a devoted father and grandfather, who centered his life around his family. He was an active person, and until recently enjoyed bowling, golfing and visiting with friends in the neighborhood. Jimmy was a jack of all trades, and family, friends and neighbors relied on his expertise for assistance with all sorts of repair issues. He enjoyed woodworking and his creative pieces are in many homes of family members and friends. Jimmy was also famous for his homemade apple pies and loved to bring them to family occasions. Family and friends will be received on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm. A Celebration of Life Funeral Service will take place on Wednesday at 10 am. Interment will follow in Fairview Cemetery.
