Obituary of Katina Alisha White
Katina Alisha White, age 39, passed away on May 18, 2019. She was the devoted daughter of Hugh and Camille White. She was the loving sister of the late Hugh White Jr. She was the beloved granddaughter of Dorothy Maxwell and the late Phyllis Murray. She was the cherished niece of Colin and Barbara Maxwell, Roger and Annie Maxwell, Peter Minott, Sandra Maxwell and Troy Evanson and Michelle Murray. She was the dear cousin of Mikesha Murray, Tyana Minott, Andrew Maxwell, Troy Maxwell, Simone Maxwell, Nyasia Maxwell and Safiya Maxwell. She is also survived by many extended family members.
Katina was born and raised in the Flatbush area of Brooklyn. She attended Holy Family grammar school. Due to her hearing impairment she had to change schools. She went on to attend Edward R. Murrow High School, it was there she learned sign language and realized she wanted to be an inspiration to those who had the same struggles she had faced. After her high school graduation she went on to attend CW Post College and completed her Bachelor's Degree at the College of Staten Island.
She became an adjunct professor at the College of Staten Island teaching American Sign Language while also pursuing her Master's Degree in Education at Columbia University. Due to Katina's impairment she was dedicated to those who had the same difficulties she had. She served as the secretary for the Deaf Club of Staten Island for many years. It was her life's work to help those with hearing impairment; she fought everyday for them and made significant strides to better her community. Recently, Katina turned her attention towards the AMC Movie Theater in order to promote Open Caption movies for those that struggle with hearing impairment. Katina leaves behind a lofty legacy and some very large shoes to fill. She provided many people with hope, motivation and love. She touched many lives in such a positive way and will be remembered by all those who had the pleasure to know her.
Funeral from the Matthew Funeral Home, Inc., 2508 Victory Blvd. on Wednesday, 5/29/19, departing at 10:00 AM. Funeral Mass will be celebrated in Our Lady of Pity R.C. Church at 10:30 AM. Interment to follow in Rosehill Cemetery, Linden, NJ 07036. Family and friends may visit on Tuesday, 5/28/19 from 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 pm.
